"The Cathedral" is a philosophical novel that examines important social and national problems from the perspective of eternal humanistic truths that must guide human civilization in order to avoid destruction and destruction. In the center of the work is the problem of the spirituality of a modern person, in particular a modern Ukrainian. This problem is related to parent-child relations, succession of generations, preservation of historical memory and national dignity, national nihilism and apostasy from one's own people. The novel consists of many chapters, each of which tells about one of the heroes. However, all of them are united by the image of the cathedral, which is the epicenter of events. He can be considered the main character of the novel. This image became a real artistic discovery of Oles Honchar and was perceived as a painful warning for all Ukrainians. It was because of this image that the author was so sharply criticized, and the work was banned for a long time.
