Viktor Petrov-Domontovych (1894 – 1969) is a Ukrainian writer, philosopher, social anthropologist, archaeologist, historian and cultural scientist, doctor of historical and philological sciences. He is a first-rate author of Ukrainian literature and a co-founder of the genre of the Ukrainian intellectual novel together with Valerian Pidmohylyny.
"The Girl with the Bear" and "Doctor Seraphicus" are the two most famous works of V. Petrov-Domontovych.
At first glance, "Girl with a Bear" tells about the love of a teacher and his rebellious student, but the work subtly parodies established moral and cultural norms. The author demonstrates the fluidity of all values that determine the life of his generation.
"Doctor Seraphicus" is an ironic narrative about the relations of an eccentric professor with the people around him.
Domontovych's plots were based on his own scientific research, which became the material for reflecting his worldview. Intellectual games were at the heart of his work, and this was revealed both through the actions and words of the characters and through the structure and style of his novels.
Domontovych successfully reveals the atmosphere of Kyiv and city life of the first third of the 20th century with vivid details throughout the text.
