The novel "Zhanna the Battalion Soldier" opens a little-known topic of Ukrainian literature in the participation of Ukrainians in the First World War. The events unfold in 1917, when the Russian government forms female "death battalions" and recruits women to the front. The main characters are Kyiv student Stefan Boyko, who refuses imperial propaganda, and Zhanna, who becomes the face of propaganda. The novel is full of anti-colonial themes and dreams of the historical rise of Ukraine, feelings of the arrival of the Ukrainian People's Republic.
The "Non-Canonical Canon" series examines Ukrainian authors whom we know little about or do not understand the context of their works. She strives to rediscover famous strangers, presenting a wide range of literary genres and styles — from the intellectual novel to adventure, from urban prose to psychological texts. Each text is accompanied by keys for reading from Ukrainian literary experts, which will help to look at the classics of Ukrainian literature in a new way.
