Marko Vovchok (real name Maria Oleksandrivna Vilinska, 1833–1907) is an outstanding Ukrainian and Russian writer, translator, one of the first women writers in Ukrainian literature. Her work played a significant role in the development of Ukrainian prose, in particular in the genres of social and everyday novels and short stories. Mark Vovchko's works gained popularity due to his deep sympathy for the peasants, the struggle for social justice and the truthful depiction of folk life.
Among the most famous works is a collection"Folk stories", which includes stories about the life of a Ukrainian village, and a novel"Institute", which describes the difficult fate of serfs. Her works, translated into many languages, had a great influence on the development of Ukrainian literature, and also contributed to the formation of national consciousness.
