Vasyl Stus

Vasyl Stus (1938–1985)- Ukrainian poet, translator, literary critic and dissident, one of the most outstanding representatives of the "sixties". He was born in Vinnytsia, received his philological education in Donetsk, where he began to engage in literary activities. Stus advocated the national revival of Ukraine, freedom of speech and human rights, which led to his persecution by the Soviet authorities. For his political views and open criticism of the regime, he was convicted and sent to the camps, where he spent the last years of his life. Stus's work is distinguished by deep lyricism, philosophical reflections and the struggle for human dignity. He is the author of the collections "Winter Trees" and "Palimpsests".
