Stephen Westland is Professor of Colour Science and Technology at the School of Design, University of Leeds. His research interests span the multidisciplinary field of colour, including colour science, colour physics, colour imaging, colour psychology and colour design.
Westland has published over 200 peer-reviewed articles, book chapters, and books in the fields of color science, color imaging, and color design. His research often uses psychophysics and machine learning to quantify human color perception and develop computer models.
He is co-author of Computational Colour Science using MATLAB (2004; 2nd edition 2012) and co-author of Universal Principles of Colour (2023). In 2008, Westland was awarded the Royal Photographic Society's Davies Medal for research in colour imaging.
In addition to his academic activities, Stephen Westland is an active musician and drummer and runs the blog "Colourchat", where he shares his knowledge about color and its applications in various fields.
