Andrew Carnegie (1835–1919) was a famous American industrialist of Scottish origin, philanthropist and one of the richest people of his time. He played a key role in the development of the US steel industry by founding the companyCarnegie Steel Company, which he later sold, becoming one of the richest people in the world. After retiring from business, Carnegie devoted his life to philanthropy, donating most of his fortune to various educational, cultural, and scientific projects.
Carnegie was a famous proponent of the "Gospel of Wealth" idea, according to which rich people have a duty to use their wealth for the good of society. He founded numerous libraries, universities, cultural institutions and foundations that continue to function today.
