Briar Levit

Briar Levit is a graphic designer, teacher, filmmaker, and researcher specializing in the history of design and its social impact. She is a professor of graphic design at Portland State University and is actively involved in preserving and reimagining the history of visual culture.

Her documentary Graphic Means (2017) chronicles the evolution of technology in graphic design from the 1950s to the 1990s. In 2021, she became the editor of Baseline Shift, an anthology highlighting the contributions of women to the field of graphic design.

Levitt is also the co-founder of The People's Graphic Design Archive, a crowdsourcing project that collects and archives materials on the history of graphic design. Her work aims to rethink the canons of design, opening up space for new voices and alternative stories
