In his debut memoir, 1000 Years of Joy and Sorrow, Ai recounts his confrontation with the state and his protest art, which made him an icon for the international creative community but also led to political exile. The title of the book comes from a poem that his father, the famous poet Ai Qin, wrote while visiting the ruins of an ancient city on the Silk Road. While in prison, Ai decided to leave his mark, feeling the need to rethink his relationship with his father. The idea to write this book came to him in 2011, when he was arrested by the police, and he wanted to share his memoirs with his son, who was only two years old at the time. After his release, he began rereading his history to preserve detailed memories of this period.
