The catalog “OLEKSANDRA EXTER: The Stage is the World” is dedicated to the exhibition of the same name at the Ukrainian Museum in New York, which runs from September 24 to January 2025. The exhibition presents about 40 works by Oleksandra Exter, mainly from American museums and private collections.

Decolonization program and the significance of Exeter
The exhibition’s curator, Peter Doroshenko, notes that this exhibition of one of the most important female artists of the early 20th century is the first step in the Museum’s decolonization program aimed at presenting Ukrainian art in the United States. Alexandra Exter played a key role in the development of the Ukrainian avant-garde, working alongside figures such as Kazimir Malevich and Volodymyr Tatlin. Her contribution to shaping the course of Ukrainian art in the early 20th century has often been underestimated due to the dominance of the Russian narrative. The exhibition “Alexandra Exter: The Stage is the World” aims to challenge this narrative by highlighting Exter’s Ukrainian origins and influence, as well as demonstrating the diversity of artistic innovations taking place in Ukraine during that period.
