The collection of texts by the British art critic and writer John Berger , On Looking, consists of three parts: a programmatic essay for Animal Studies , "Why Look at Animals?" (1977), and two sections of 22 articles (1966–1979), written mainly for the British magazine New Society. In this edition, they are grouped under the titles "The Use of Photography" and "Lived Moments."

Berger explores the history of human-animal relationships, analyzes Susan Sontag's book On Photography , and examines the work of August Sander, Paul Strand, and war photography. He also reflects on the relationship between the body and landscape, and on the paintings of Courbet, Millet, Turner, Bacon, Magritte, and others. His texts offer the perspective of a contemporary critic who analyzes the art of the past, tracing its connections to history and personal experience.

The translation and publication of the book was carried out with the support of the European Union within the framework of the "House of Europe" program.
