Mykhailo Andrienko: Return | Adriana Kochman

The book "Mykhailo Andrienko: The Return" is a bilingual (Ukrainian and English) catalog of the exhibition of the same name, which took place at the Ukrainian Institute of Modern Art (UIMA) in 2020. This publication is an important event for Ukrainian art history, as it introduces the general public to the work of Mykhailo Andrienko (1894–1987), one of the key Ukrainian modernists and representatives of the avant-garde, who lived most of his life in France. The catalog includes over 90 reproductions of his works, allowing you to fully appreciate the artist's versatility and innovation.

The "Return" in the book's title symbolizes not only the exhibition of Andrienko's works in Ukraine, but also the return of his name and legacy to the context of Ukrainian culture, from which he was unjustly displaced and forgotten during the Soviet era. Unfortunately, many of the artist's works, including 15 paintings from the Lviv Museum, were destroyed as "formal" and "abstract". However, a significant part of his legacy has been preserved in museum and private collections in France, and this book, prepared by the UIMM and the RODOVID publishing house, seeks to fill the gaps in knowledge about his work. The publication contains thorough art history articles by researchers Adriana Kochman and Vita Susak, as well as biographical information that allows for a deeper understanding of the life and creative path of Mykhailo Andrienko. This book is an important step towards restoring historical justice and popularizing the contribution of Ukrainian artists to world modernism.
