Slava Kurilov
Slava Kurilov — a Soviet oceanographer who became famous for his desperate act: in 1974, he escaped from the USSR by jumping from a cruise ship into the ocean near the Philippines. His journey became a symbol of the desire for freedom, he crossed more than 100 kilometers in the open sea to reach the shores of the Philippines. After escaping, Kurilov worked as an oceanographer in Canada, and his story inspired many and became the subject of the book "Alone in the Ocean".
