Sasha Kurmaz (real name Oleksandr Volodymyrovych Kurmaz), was born in 1986 in Kyiv, Ukraine. In 2005, he graduated from the Faculty of Communication Engineering of the Kyiv Electromechanical College, and in 2008, from the Faculty of Design of the National Academy of Managers of Culture and Arts.
He began his creative path in the early 2000s with graffiti writing. Until 2010, he was a member of the Kyiv group "Psia Krev", known in the Ukrainian graffiti scene.
Kurmaz works in various genres: photography, public interventions, socially engaged and participatory art. His works have been presented at numerous exhibitions in Germany, Austria and France. In 2015 he received the C/O Berlin Talent Award, was a finalist for the PinchukArtPrize twice (2013 and 2017), and in 2020 he became the laureate of the Kazimir Malevich Art Prize.
In addition, Sasha Kurmaz is the co-author of the book "Orthodox Chic", which explores the phenomenon of post-Soviet religious architecture.
