Roland Barthes (1915–1980) was a French philosopher, literary critic, semiotician, and cultural theorist who greatly influenced the development of structuralism and poststructuralism. His research covered a wide range of topics, from literary criticism to the analysis of mass culture and photography. In the book "Camera Lucida. Noting a Photograph" he examines photography through the prism of personal experiences, introducing the key concepts of studium and punctum. Barthes is also known for his works "Mythologies", "The Pleasure of the Text", "Fragments of the Language of a Lover", in which he explored language, signs, and social codes. His ideas remain influential in modern humanities and media studies.
